Traditional Medicine

Tarko
Tarko :- Tarko is used as disinfectant and antiseptic after cutting child's naval and is burnt in vicinity of new baby after birth.

Tarko is kind of tree with thorn in whole of its body. Its charcoal powder is used as antiseptic in furuncle, Icthyma, Impetigo and other infective skin condition even in umbilical stump of new born to prevent umbilical sepsis.

Tarko is normally found in neighboring land of Nyishi. There are two types of Tarko.. 


BORBA TAMI:- Kind of herbs with bipinnate leave pattern found around the village dwelling of Ziro. It has very good local heamostasis for small trauma like cut injury. Its leaf is crushed and apply over injury site to prevent bleeding.

TIIPANG:- Kind of mosses found in jungle used for local heamostasis.

BORTA TABU IIDING:- It is dried head of a snake called BORTA (?KRAIT/ KING COBRA) found in deep forest of Ziro. BORTA snake is long, black and brown stripped throughout body with V shaped designed over head. Its dried Head is powder and used to treat pain abdomen.

TIIKE/TAKEY BYUNIING:- It is a local procedure to treat cellulitis. As per traditional believe, Cellulitis is caused by an invisible small organism called Tiike. By procedure of TIIKE BYUNIING, an small multiple incision is given over affected site of body and small cylindrical piece of bamboo is apply over incisional site. Negative suction is given through the tube by mouth to express TIIKE infected wound. This procedure was done by a Specialised person.


SATHI:- Sathi  is a local named of plant resin extracted from blue pine (PIISA YASANG) has traditional medicinal value in foot crack, tooth ache, paronychias. It is an amber coloured, viscous substance with sharp ethanolic scent. Its is highly combustible. In olden day Satih was used in place of candle and torch.

Yabiñ:-  Yabiñ is kept immersed in water for a night and that water is used for dysentery.

Breast milk:- Breast milk of young mother is used for eye infection and also after ear and nose piercing.

"Ethnomedicinal botany of apatani" a journal written by  Prof. Chandra Prakash Kala where he has describes 158 plant species used by apatani people for medicinal purpose might not be altogther correct. Some apprehension has been pointed by some senior member like Millo Tago on use of some herbs, Say, Onion being use for eye ailment or using of Sarse (Finger Millet) for stomach disorder, Tonic, Cold.
